Gaara wasn't always as calm and emotionless as he is today, he was actually quite the opposite when he was a little boy. He tried to be friendly towards others despite their fear towards him however that all changed thanks to the actions of his Uncle Yashomaru. Afterwards he came to the conclusion that no one loved him and that caused him to use his sand to carve the Kanji for Love upon his forehead to show him as “The demon who loved himself.” Following that incident, he found himself withdrawn from everyone, loathing and hating everyone and everything but himself and his mother who he considered the Shukaku to be. He found a purpose in life sometime later, finding that killing the numerous assassins and various other people who he deemed problematic for his existence.
Sadly things tend to get even worse with Gaara before any better, for the Demon gave Gaara insomnia because Gaara feared that while he slept the demon would consume him. This left Gaara able to be merciless with ease, even slaughtering two Shinobi in the Chunin exam's Forest of Death when they had pleaded with him to let them go. His Siblings, Kankuro and Temari were also objects of hatred for him, due to the fact he never saw them as family and would not hesitate to kill them like anyone else should they ever interfere with him.
After he was defeated by Naruto in the Hidden Leaf Village during the Sand Village Invasion, Gaara had found that Naruto had the same pain when he was younger as well. He also found out that Naruto never gave up his hopes of being seen by the others in the village and was able to find the friends he so desperately wanted in the end while Gaara was left alone to suffer the way he did. It was thanks to Naruto's words that Gaara questioned the way he had lived his life up till now and decided to try again, this time taking the same dreams as Naruto but for his village, the title of Kazekage so he could be closer to the people of his village and become something they cherished. The years that followed, Gaara's new path was seen by the fact he started to use his own power instead of the Shukaku's and he even developed a strong bond with Naruto, becoming a great friend.
Currently he is caring to those who live in his village, his siblings he loves and tries to spend more time with than he did before. While he is still emotionless towards those he fights in combat, he has become quite protective of those he considers his friends or close to him and will not let anything come to harm them, even if it costs him his life.

Karura: Gaara's mother and the one person that Gaara never really had known in his life. However, despite this he is told several times by his Uncle Yashomaru that she loved him more than anything in the world.
The Fourth Kazekage: The father of Gaara, he did everything he could to try to save Karura but only to failed. Gaara's father taught Gaara some Ninjutsu at first, seeing him as the great weapon of the village, but later assigned his Uncle Yashomaru to take care of him while cutting Gaara off from his Older Sister and Brother. After testing Gaara to see if he had control over the Shukaku by ordering his uncle to kill him, he saw Gaara only as a failure when Gaara lost control of the Shukaku and had since attempted to have him assassinated...only to fail each time. In the end, he was killed by Orochimaru.
Kankuro: Gaara's older brother....While they were mostly kept at a distant from one another and he even feared Gaara when he was younger, they eventually grew close together over the years thanks to Naruto's help at the end of the invasion of Konoha.

Sabaku no Gaara was born prematurely to the Fourth Kazekage and Karura of the Hidden Sand Villiage. Sadly though, Gaara had a much darker meaning to those around him, for The Third Kazekage had ordered a woman named Chiyo to seal the One Tailed Shukaku inside Gaara when he was inside of his Mother's womb. Gaara's mother had died after child birth, before dying she had asked to hold her child and said that she would protect him before she faded away. Gaara grew up, originally trained by his father in the art of Ninjutsu but was sent to be cared for by his Uncle Yashomaru, who was the brother of his Mother. Due to the fact the Shukaku was put inside of Gaara, many of the villagers feared him for the power the creature he had within and it seemed that only Yashomaru understood him. However that all changed one night when Yashomaru was called to the Kazekage's office for something that would completely change Gaara's life forever. The Kazekage wanted to see if Gaara could fully control the Shukaku even when pushed over the edge, so he sent Yashomaru to kill Gaara to test the boy's resolve.
Sadly it didn't go over well for Yashomaru, for Gaara's Sand was too much for the young man who laid broken and battered across from him. Yashomaru then told Gaara he had hated him, that his sister's death was his fault and that he wanted Gaara to disappear, revieling an entire vest of Bomb Tags that went off as he muttered the last words, “...please die.” Gaara's sand protected him from the blast and afterwards he used it to carve the Kanji for love into his forehead, signifying that he was the demon who only loved himself. Afterwards, he had lost control of the demon, the Shukaku rampaged throughout the village before the Kazekage was able to stop him. From that day forward, Gaara became a dark and evil person, sparing not even a seconds worth of time to kill something should they cross him. His Father had put an assassination order on Gaara's head, and each time, one by one the Assassins would die and it was thanks to all the murder and contempt for those around him that gained him a better grip upon the Demon inside. Eventually his father stopped all of the assassination attempts upon his son and declared him the ultimate weapon of the Sand village from that day forward like he had originally planned from the beginning.
Years down the road, Gaara arrived with his Siblings to Konoha where he participated in the Chunin Exams. During the first exam, he had passed rather easily and was never caught cheating thanks to his Third Eye technique. During the Second phase, the Forest of Death, he showed his murderous intent by crushing a team that had merely looked at him the wrong way and had even threatened his own brother and sister when they tried to talk him out of it. However Gaara's team completed a most phenomenal feat during this part of the exams by completing the phase in record time and Gaara didn't so much as have a patch of dirt on a single bit of his clothing.
The next part of the Chunin Exams was the ultimate shocker for Gaara, because he had to face an opponent who was able to bypass his sand shield for the first time. His Opponent was Rock Lee, a boy from the Leaf who was gifted in the art of taijutsu. At first....Lee was nothing more than an annoyance for Gaara with his attack easily deflected by the Sand Shield Gaara had around him. However, Lee soon removed the weights from his leg and suddenly his speed and power increased to the point that Lee was able to out move the sand and hit Gaara dead on. Due to this, Gaara had to use his second level of the defense, the sand armor which covered his skin in a hardened layer of sand. The fight continued, Lee seeming to be the one who would be victorious until the very end where Gaara's Sand Gourd turned into sand to cushion the blow from the blow Lee had dealt him. With Lee injured, Gaara used his sand to crush one of his arms and legs, crippling the boy however when he went in for the Lee, Lee's Master Might Guy appeared and stopped it.
After his fight against Lee, Gaara was waiting for the Exams to continue on. One of the contestants named Zaku attempted to kill Gaara before the exams started but was quickly dispatched by Gaara in mere seconds. From there Gaara went to the Hospital where Lee was recovering from his battle with Gaara. Upon his attempt to kill him however, he was interrupted by Naruto Uzumaki and Shikamaru Nara who was there visiting the injured Shinobi. It was here that Gaara told the two of them about the Shukaku inside of him and attempted to kill them away but like before, Might Guy stopped him again and Gaara took his leave from the Hospital.
A few days later, the Final rounds of the Chunin Exams had begun and after a few fights into the exam, Gaara's time came against his opponent, Sasuke Uchiha. During the Final rounds, it was a plan by Orochimaru that Gaara was to release the Shukaku during the invasion to cause mass panic and destruction. When his fight came, Gaara had killed people on his way to the arena itself, two thugs who tried to make Gaara lose due to some bet that was placed on the fight. When the fight with Sasuke commenced, Gaara realized that Sasuke had the same Taijutsu skill as Lee did and didn't have any choice but to attempt to unleash the demon. However, despite being surrounded by the nearly invincible sand shield he had placed around him to perform the jutsu without trouble, Sasuke used his new jutsu the Chidori to wound Gaara. This was the first time Gaara had ever been harmed by anyone physically in his life and it left him in no condition to unleash the Shukaku. Temari and Kankuro attempted to pull him out of the village while the Invasion went on without them however Sasuke, Naruto, Shikamaru, Shino, and Sakura.
The chase after Gaara was a long one and at different points, his siblings had to stop and fend off pursuers. When Sasuke Uchiha caught up with him, Gaara was changing into the Shukaku. Sasuke attempted to take Gaara down by using the Chidori two more times but sadly it wasn't enough to stop him and it seemed like it was the end for Sasuke until Naruto and Sakura showed up. With their arrival, Gaara became greatly interested with Naruto and in order to get him to fight he pinned Sakura to a tree to anger him to fight. The fight for Naruto against Gaara was not going very at the beginning, for Gaara seemed to be on the upper side of things until Naruto decided to attack the base of his tail. Naruto used a move he had experienced Kakashi Hatake use on him one before, the 1000 years of death technique but with a few changes to it, like a Kunai with a bomb tag connected to it.
This gave Naruto a huge upper hand in the fight since Gaara's Defenses were dramatically dropped and when Naruto seemed to have victory assured, Gaara fully released the Shukaku's body in full force. Gaara then attempted to kill Naruto but Naruto was quick to summon the chief Toad Gamabunta to save him. Gamabunta was able to push back Gaara in his current state so once Gaara appeared upon Shukaku's head, he quickly used the Feign sleeping technique to put him out and allow the Shukaku to fully come out and take control. The battle was fierce, Gamabunta and Naruto nearly didn't make it until they used a combine transformation technique to change Gamabunta into the Nine Tailed Fox. Once this happened Gamabunta grabbed hold of the Shukaku and Naruto woke Gaara up with a Massive headbutt, causing him to wake up and the Shukaku's body to crumble away.
The fight truly ended when the two of them exchanged two final blows to one another, Naruto claimed victory over Gaara afterwards. It was here that Naruto told Gaara that he understood where he came from, having a similar kind of past but the only difference was he never gave up. It was this time with Naruto that changed Gaara from then on, causing him to take up a new path in his life. He apologized to his own brother and sister, which shocked them greatly before he left with them back to the Sand Villiage.
When Sasuke was defecting from the Leaf Village, Tsunade had requested the Sand Siblings help in recovering Sasuke. Gaara had arrived to aide Rock Lee in his fight against the Sound Four's Leader Kimimaro. When Lee had tried to continue fighting, Gaara merely told him not too, telling him he wasn't in the condition to go on and to instead let him handle Kimimaro. The fight went on, Gaara unleashing new techniques against the sound ninja as the power shifted between them back and forth. In the end however, it looked like Kimimaro was going to finish them both but luckily they were saved when in the middle of his final attack, his mysterious disease killed him. Afterwards, Gaara and his siblings returned to Konoha to help the Academy with Shikamaru before they returned back to the Sand villiage. Three years later on, Gaara had grown up into a powerful shinobi and had claimed the title of Kazekage just as he had sworn he would to Naruto.
