Twelve years before the start of the seires, Tobi revealed himself. He had found out that Kushina Uzumaki was the jinchuriki for the 9-Tails Kyuubi also known as Kurama. He also found out that she was about to give childbirth which would weaken the seal holding Kurama, which Minato was there to help keep the seal in place. He soon found out where Kushina was being hidden and got there and easily dispatched the anbu bodyguards and midwives. He then would take the newborn Naruto hostage threatening to kill Naruto if Minato didn't step away from Kushina. He threw Naruto into the air and Minato quickly retrieved the child and teleported somewhere else where Naruto would be safe. Tobi now took Kushina and took her somewhere where he could start the extraction process.

As the seal was about to break Tobi used his sharingan to gain control on Kurama. Once Karama broke out of the seal, Kushina somehow survived this and Tobi commanded Karama to kill her but Minato appeared and saved her and quickly retreated. Uninterested he summoned the Kyuubi into Konoha and ordered Karama to destroy it. Minato soon came to help the village but before he could get a word out of what had happened, Tobi attempted to suck him into his space-time techniuqe to stop Minatos interferences. But he used his own teleportation technique. The two began to fight untill Minato finally struck a blow on Tobi with the Rasengan. Minato then branded him with a seal for his Flying Thunder God Technique, allowing him to teleport to Tobi whenever he wanted. He then used a Contract Seal on Tobi to remove Kurama from his control. Wounded and deprived of his weapon he fled vowing that Kurama would be his again one day. In the end Minato and Kushina gave there lifes to save the village and ensure the son a great future.

Eight years after the death of Minato and the attack on the village. Tobi returned to reignite the flames of war but was stopped by none other then Itachi Uchiha, who convinced Tobi to spare the village in return Tobi would have to help Itachi kill his clan. obi complied, training Itachi and providing assistance. However, Itachi never truly trusted Tobi and kept an eye on him for the rest of his life. Around this time Tobi also met with Danzo Shimura.

Later Tobi also took control over the Fourth Mizukage, technically making him the real Mizukage. He also would lead the village into the years of the "Bloody Mist". Kisame Hoshigaki was one of the few Kirigakure ninja to know of his manipulation of the Fourth. Kisame helped Tobi in his quest to bring about an end to the "world of lies"
