But when duty calls, Shikamaru has a strong moral compass and sense of commitment to his friends. Even though he says he lacks bravery, he would sacrifice himself and face almost certain death for his friends and the village without a second thought. Shikamarus raw leadership skill he was first of the Rookie Nine[/color] to become Chunin. The weight of the decisions he must make as a chūnin and, thus, team leader have caused Shikamaru to mature rapidly. Choji Akimichi is Shikamarus best friend, he also said that if he had to face Choji in the Chunin Exams he would give up. After he left Choji to fight with Jirobo, Shikamaru said that Choji was the strongest of all of the others in the team.
His most distinctive train is that he thinks most women bossy and troublesome partiucarly Temari, Ino, and his mom. Shikamaru defines them as demanding, and sometimes even scary. Even his father shares this same attitude. When Shikamaru questioned his father about why he would marry such a domineering woman, his father responded that even the toughest woman will show her gentle side to the man she loves. Nevertheless, Shikamaru is generally courteous to women, doing them favours and avoiding fights with them. He feels that men, like him, should be the ones protecting them and not the other way around.

Which Shikamaru would spend his day sleeping all day to Shikamaru, even the very effort of putting pen-to-paper was just too much effort for him to put into it unless he had to. This would cause Iruka Umino to lecture them numerous times.

Once Shikamaru was 12 he had graduated the academy along with several of the others. He was soon placed under the teachings of Sarutobi Asuma in this team was Choji Akimichi Shikamarus friend and Ino Yamaka. These clans have a long past together and one member from the clans have formed a team.
Team 10 had done several missions and what not before the announcement of the Chunin Exams. The team also had some time to train before the actual exam were to start. Once the time for the First Part of the Exams had come the trio would take the written exam and shortly pass it. But they all were informed that written exam was to test their information gathering and decision making skill.
They now went on go to take the Second exam. Now the trio had to use their teamwork for the next exam. But before they could enter the second exam they had to sign a release form, acknowledging the dangers and that the proctors will not be held responsible for any deaths. They now were taken to the Fourty-Fourth Training Ground[/color]. It was a very dangerous place, filled with hordes of flora and fauna; often gigantic, poisonous — or even more likely, both — hence its name. The genin were given either the Scrolls of Heaven or the Scrolls of Earth, the goal was to take one of the other teams scroll by any means nessecary, and they needed to get both the scrolls to the center of the forest within five days all the while not reading the scrolls. While in the forest Shikamaru, Choji, and Ino came across Sakura fighting of the Sound team of Dosu, Kin and Zaku, the trio were hiding behind a bush while watching Lee fall to the sound team. But Shikamaru being his normal old self had asked Ino if she wanted them to intervene soon the trio would jump into the fight much to Chojis dismay who wanted nothing to do with it. The three would try to hold their own against the sound ninjas but did not have much luck, but they shaved of enough time for Sasuke to wake up his curse seal having activated. The trio would quickly hide but soon would pass and go on to the Third part of the exam.
Now next were the preliminary rounds where genin were pitted against each other and who ever had won would go to the finals. After several fights Shikamaru was finally up and his match was Kin one of the Sound ninja. Shikamaru was at a disadvantage but after a bit of fighting Shikamaru finally got her backed into the wall, he now had her in his shadow bind and had pulled out a shuriken Kins body following everything Shikamaru did, he would throw the shuriken along with Kin. Shikamaru would quickly ducked back to dodge Kins shuriken; Kin had done the same thing but had hit her head on the wall and knocked herself out giving the fight to Shikamaru. Soon the rest of the matches would come to an end, two of those being Inos and Choji, which Inos came out in a draw and Choji had lost.
A month later after the preliminaries Shikamaru and Naruto were going to visit Choji since he was hospitalized for eating too much when the would come across Gaara going into Lees room and attemptng to kill him it was then when Gaara revealed to the two about his past, it was after that Gaara tried to kill them but Guy had intervened. Soon the Finales of the exam would begin after several matches Shikamarus match would come his enemy this time being Temari, which was another time Shikamaru had to fight a girl. Both he and Temari were excellent strategists but he was better. As it appeared that Shikamaru was using pointless attacks afte pointless attacks but in reality he was five steps ahead of Temari. He eventually got Temari into a position where he could use his Shadow Bind Technique using the whole Naruto had made in the previous match. But when Shikamaru was close to winning he gave up and quit he had said it was due to low chakra, but he was only lazy and wanted to avoid further matches and he didn't want to hurt a girl.
After his match Sasukes and Gaaras match was to start and the time was extended due to its importance. After Sasuke appeared late he demonstrated that his power has increased far beyond that of how he was before the finals. But before Sasuke could finish the match a smoke bomb was set of in the Hokages box revealing Orochimaru as the Kazekage and Kabuto soon put a sleeping genjutsu over the crowd but Shikamaru had been able to dispell the genjutsu but pretended to be asleep. He was awoken and Kakashi had summoned a dog called Pakkun to help in tracking Sasuke who was in pursuit of Gaara. Shikamaru, Sakura, Naruto and Pakkun would then leave Kakashi and Guy who joined to defeat the Sound ninja at the stadium. Shikamaru soon noticed they were being followed and volunteered to sacrifice himself to let Sakura, Naruto and Pakkun go on ahead while he delayed the Sound ninja and to later be saved by Asuma
Within the aftermath of the invasion on Konoha, Hiruzen Sarutobi was lost fighting his former pupil Orochimaru, which struck the village with sadness. Shikamaru was also the only of the Rookie Nine to be promoted to Chunin due to his peformance. Shikamaru, Ino, Choji attended the funeral as well did there sensei Asuma who was the son of Hiruzen. After this the search for Tsunade who would later become the new hokage started. Once Tsunade was brought back to Konoha to heal Kakashi and Sasuke from mental injuries inflicted by Itachi Uchiha. Sasuke would later leave Konoha after being healed, him leaving was due to his anger over Naruto being stronger than him. Tsunade then asked Shikamaru as his first mission as a Chunin to form a team and find Sasuke and bring him back and since casualties were high from the invasion he only had slim pickings those being genin. He immediatly chose Naruto and Choji and added Kiba and Neji to the team. The five would then set out in pursue of Sasuke and the Sound Four.
During pursuit there presence was discovered and they were trapped by Jirobo. Shikamaru soon found a way to escape and had to leave Choji to fight Jirobo but wasnt concerned he would lose. Soon each of the members would end up fighting each member, Shikamaru would meet his enemy Tayuya. She had summoned three demons and controlled them with her flute giving her the upperhand over Shikamaru. Shikamaru counted his weapons and devised a elaborate plan. He threw eight kunai at Tayuya to see what finger movements she would use to protect herself with. Being unable to read her music he eventually took control of the three with his shadow, telling her how he found shogi fun because he could take over his opponent's pieces. He began to attack her with the demons prompting her to unsummon them, she would eventually get stuck into his shadow but she broke out of by activating her second form of her curse seal. She would then attempt to put him into a genjutsu to where his arms started melt and other torturous things, but he had already broken out of it by breaking his finger. When she attempted to slit his throat he punched her in the gut and caught her back in his shadow. He then explained about his plan and how he missed with that kunai on purpose to get her close while he then prepared his Shadow–Neck Binding Technique. When he was getting low on chakra, Temari swooped in and saved him quickly taking care of Tayuya she and him would head back to the village learning of the others and that Sasuke escaped. His first response to the missions failure was that he should give up being a ninja,but his father scolded him for being such a coward, explaining that his friends would then only be led by some other ninja. If they were to die under that ninja's command, Shikamaru would feel worse for not having been there to try and save them. When he found out everyone would be fine Shikamaru cried out of joy and relief, and resolved to do better next time. He then later saw Temari and her siblings off. Three years would pass as his team had all became chunin. He also was now given an official position as a Chuunin Examiner. He was also to meet with Temari, who was eventually given the counterpart of his position in her own village, meaning the two met for official business while arranging the new Chuunin Exam.
